Effective immediately, cash payments made to the Sacramento Superior Court will be rounded to the nearest five-cent increment in accordance with general accounting principles for symmetrical rounding.

This policy is being implemented in response to the U.S. Mint discontinuing production of the penny and the decreasing availability of pennies in general circulation.

Pursuant to Standing Order SSC-26-1, cash payments shall be rounded as follows:

• Amounts ending in 1 or 2 cents will be rounded down so the total ends in 0 cents.
• Amounts ending in 3 or 4 cents will be rounded up so the total ends in 5 cents.
• Amounts ending in 6 or 7 cents will be rounded down so the total ends in 5 cents.
• Amounts ending in 8 or 9 cents will be rounded up so the total ends in 0 cents.

Examples:

• $10.21 becomes $10.20
• $10.24 becomes $10.25
• $10.36 becomes $10.35
• $10.39 becomes $10.40

This policy applies only to cash payments.

Payments made by check, credit card, debit card, or electronic funds transfer will continue to be processed for the exact amount required by law or under the applicable fee schedule.
