Judge Steven M. Gevercer was elected today by his colleagues on the Sacramento Superior Court bench to serve as Assistant Presiding Judge for 2026 and 2027.

Gevercer earned his J.D. from the University of San Francisco School of Law. He started his legal career as a sole practitioner, opening a law office in 1984.

Gevercer left the private sector to become a deputy public defender for the Tulare County Public Defender’s Office (1985-1989). He went on to serve as a senior trial attorney for the Sacramento County Public Defender’s Office (1989-1997).

Gevercer served as a deputy attorney general and legislative advocate for the Attorney General (1997-2008), a supervising deputy attorney general (2008-2011), and a senior assistant attorney general for the Tort and Condemnation Section of the A.G.’s Civil Division (2011-2012).

Gevercer was appointed to the Sacramento Superior Court bench in 2012 by former Gov. Jerry Brown. During his time on the bench, Gevercer has presided over a trial and civil writs calendar. He also served as the supervising probate judge in 2016 and 2017. While there, he helped develop a program that provides pro bono services to unrepresented individuals. He serves as an adviser to the Sacramento County Grand Jury.
